- Macintosh software updates database -- 15May94 [edition 8]
-
-
- A resource for people who support Macintosh systems out here in the field.
- For a full explanation of what this thing is, see TidBITS#223/25-Apr-94 .
-
-
- 1. Edition 8 of the Macintosh software updates database is a complete
- replacement for all earlier editions. Edition 8 contains 30 new records
- and a substantial number of revised ones. The System Enablers section has
- been reordered in an effort to make this particularly unmemorable area a
- bit easier to understand.
-
-
- 2. We are aware that descriptions of a number of components are missing or
- or incomplete. We just have not had the time to write up the entries.
- Amongst the components that we hope to include or complete in a future
- edition are:
-
- Disk First Aid, HD SC Setup, AppleShare Chooser extension, Printer Chooser
- extensions, AppleScript (apart from Apple Event Manager), Express Modem,
- Apple Modem, MacTerminal, MacX.400, MacOSI, HyperCard, HyperCard Player,
- Apple Personal Diagnostics, Chinese Language Kit, Japanese Language Kit,
- MoviePlayer, PC Exchange; and the components that come bundled with some AV
- machines (including Video Monitor, Apple Phone, Plaintalk, Sound Effects,
- Speech Manager, AV Digitiser Options, Auto Power On/Off)
-
- See also section 5 below.
-
-
- 3. Provided without warranty. We have tried to ensure that the
- information in this database is accurate. However, we cannot guarantee
- this. Caveat lector. You should always check Appleās original
- documentation to determine whether an update is appropriate for your
- computer(s).
-
-
- 4. Here is a description of the database fields in the order that they
- appear within each record in the plain text file. This information should
- be useful for those readers who import the text file into their favourite
- database application.

- When used as a sort key, renders the database a
- little more digestible by humans

- [will be redone in some future edition to be
- more useful]

- should be applied

- Superseded by ------------ Which update supersedes this one

- Curiosity 1 -------------- A consequence of the way ClarisWorks works
- Previous edition date ---- Date of the edition before this one
- [used in update status calculations in
- ClarisWorks]

- Curiosity 3 -------------- Another consequence of the way ClarisWorks works
- Curiosity 4 -------------- Another consequence of the way ClarisWorks works
-
- We have tried to be consistent in our use of terms in the "Apply to" field
- to facilitate effective searching of the database. We have often
- abbreviated "Quadra" to "Q" (e.g. "Q800") to save space. We have always
- spelled out "Centris" in full. We have always included the abbreviation
- "PB" in records for updates applicable to PowerBooks. We have used the
- contraction "Duo" to refer to PowerBook Duos.
-
- The presence of the string "<bullet>?<bullet>" in a field indicates that
- the information in that field is unknown or known to be incomplete.
- "<bullet>" is the <option>8 character in the Macintosh extended character
- set.
-
-
- 5. Futures. Assuming that there remain enough interested users, and that
- we have enough spare time to continue working on it, we are likely to move
- the database development from ClarisWorks to one of the ACI 4D products.
- Whilst the upheaval is regrettable, ClarisWorks just does not appear to be
- sophisticated enough a tool for representing information of this
- complexity. In particular, a lot of the information is inherently
- relational.
-
-
- 6. Feedback can be addressed to macupd@nostromo.demon.co.uk. Thanks.
